The Philippines, bannered by the Northern Consolidated Cement, entered the 1985 World Intercub Tournament as the shortest team in Girona, Spain. The team lost all but one of their games. The Philippine team was reinforced by three imports, later on naturalized, Denis Still, Jeff Moore and current San Antonio assistant coach Chip the Machine Gun Engelland. In the game against Italian club Banco di Roma Virtus, a certain Avelino Samboy Lim played for the Philippine club despite having an asthma attack. He stunned the Italian side by exploding for 37 points. Thus, the legend of Samboy Lim was born.
