The Pilgrimage 2 Days of Fun Dont forget to hit the HD button :-) We came into NY City through the Lincoln Tunnel, 1.3 miles long. So many vehicles, the line-ups of traffic, and this amazing skyline of skyscrapers. The frenetic energy is palpable on the streets. We checked into the downtown Hilton hotel and went for dinner at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. It was a great way to end our day, we got to listen to aspiring actors and singers belt out show tunes while serving us dinner. We had to stop Bev from climbing on the tables and singing New York, New York at the top of her voice ☺ Later, many walked a short distance to 7th avenue and the dazzling lights of Times Square. Monday. We were up bright and early for a city bus tour with a very entertaining tour guide called Matthew. He gave an incredibly detailed and funny running commentary of the personal history of the city; who did what to whom of gangsters, Hollywood stars and political people. We stopped for a short walk in Central Park to see what was once the city garbage dump that is now transformed into this beautiful park with manmade lakes and trees planted everywhere Another wonderful stop was Grand Central Station, a cathedral to the railroad. A most spectacular building and hard to believe now it was once destined to be destroyed until Jackie Kennedy led the charge to save it. Absolutely beautiful. After we parted company with Matthew, we went to Rockefeller Centre , through the security scanners, and then up to the top to see the city in all its glory. Rockefeller Centre is taller than the Empire State Building, with stunning views all the way around. From this vantage point, we had a great view of the Empire State and Central Park. That evening there was a premier at the theatre across the street from our hotel so a few of the group saw Oprah Winfrey, Helen Mirren and Steven Spielberg walk the red carpet. Some of the group went to Broadway and saw the Newsies musical and they found that to be great fun. Tuesday afternoon on was our time so some went shopping, or walked the streets of the city or Central Park. Some experienced taxi rides and others the subway. That night we went to Studio 54, the site of the famous 70’s nightclub, with front row seats in the upper mezzanine. A very entertaining and moving production with the phenomenal Alan Cumming as MC. New York City is incredible, the energy, the beautiful buildings - old and new. New York is a love affair with life.
