The Pink Panther game against Rockville on October 27 was disappointing. After four games in which the team was competitive, the Panthers were never in this one. The Panthers only attempted eight shots which nearly equaled the number of goals scored by Rockville in the 7 – 3 loss. Alex Moy was the offensive star of the game scoring our only three goals on her four shots. Emma Owen assisted on one of the goals but that was basically the extent of the offense. Claire Chung, Fiona Franke, Emma, and Brigit Shields each attempted a single shot but each was turned aside by the talented Rockville goalie. On the defensive side Virginia Schlosser was our bright spot with five ground balls and two interceptions accounting for seven turnovers. Erica Guthrie contributed three ground balls with Claire Chung, Ashleigh Kozo, Jamie Pincus, and Megan Remini each gathering two. Single ground balls were collected by Julia Crews, Fiona, Rachel Johnson, Emma Owen, and Emmie Tallman who turned in a strong game in goal with five saves. Unfortunately half of the team didn’t know what our crash defense which was taught at the October 26 practice entailed because over half the team missed the practice. Failure to employ this defensive tactic which was taught by former MVSA player and current Watkins Mill senior, Sarah Crews (thanks for your help, Sarah) allowed too many uncontested shots which definitely was a factor in the loss. On a positive note, 18 of our 20 players saw game action with only Julia Brock and Erin Lynch missing the game due to a schedule conflict between this game and their elite team’s game. I’m certain Julia’s offense and Erin’s defense would have made the final score much closer but am glad both girls are expanding their skills with the elite team. After comparing notes with Coach Stan, we have decided to award this week’s game ball to Emmie Tallman. Emmie’s five saves kept the score differential from being embarrassing, her positioning when RGLC players “rolled the crease”, and her ability to not become dejected while facing many shots (some of which were not on goal so there were more than 12 (7 goals and 5 saves). It was a tough decision because Alex and Virginia also had good games. But we all know about the soft spot in Coach Bob’s heart for goalies which probably swung the vote in Emmie’s favor. We wrap up the fall season on November 3. We are hoping to come away with a victory to make our fall record 4-2. And, as a reminder, the game will be played on the HOLY CHILD turf field at 1 pm.
