The Pitchfork review. Despite the influence that Mecca Normals had on generations of politically conscious indie rock, the sonic muck of those efforts garbled the wide-eyed messages that Smith often tried to convey. On Empathy, however, the tough gnarls of Lesters distorted guitar pricks and Smiths hyperactive vocal workouts are tamed in favor of clarity and transparency. Im not saying this is the worst or best thing the guy said -- its just Pitchforky enough to use for the pull quote. Sonic muck and wide-eyed messages, eh? Oh, and I see hes a student -- great.
