The Pocono Record published my candidate profile today, 10/25/13. Hope you like it. October 25, 2013 Name: Leigh Stelzer Party: Republican Office: School Director, Region 3 What makes you qualified for this office? Forty-plus years of experience in education — classroom teacher and researcher — with extensive knowledge of management, business, economics, labor relations and computer-aided learning; resident homeowner, taxpayer, Mount Pocono Borough; chair, Mount Pocono Zoning Board; Ph.D. University of Michigan, Political Science and BA, NYU; faculty, Stillman School of Business (30 years); Seton Hall University, retired; chair, Department of Management, SHU, five years; author of articles on teaching, learning, education law, China-US cross-cultural business relationships. What single accomplishment do you want to have completed by the end of your first year in office? For the past two years there have been convulsive changes in the district: reorganization, consolidation, staff reduction, revised class schedules and curriculum revision. Now there needs to be a thorough assessment to see if the changes are working to foster a superior educational environment and to improve student performance and satisfaction. At the same time, I would be relentless in encouraging the board and administration to examine every aspect of current operations — budgets, student services, teacher deployment, school operations, facilities management, technology utilization and the coordination of teachers with students and parents. High taxes are an obstacle to home sales and business and job creation. We must find efficiencies in current operations to lower taxes. My report card would be improved scores on the Keystone Exams and lower taxes and economic growth. Why are you running? I am running because I have devoted my lifes work to the education of our youth and I think PMSD can be a catalyst and partner in reviving opportunity and prosperity for the children of the Poconos. We need to prepare our children with the skills necessary to get, keep and grow jobs and to become contributing citizens. We need to work closely with the business community to identify and create new employment opportunities for our next generation.
