The Polaris Project, an anti-human trafficking organization based in the District of Columbia, for seven years has operated a national hotline for victims to call when theyre in desperate need of help. The hotline has received more than 75,000 calls, and specialists manning it previously had to navigate between a callers location on Google Maps, a Microsoft Word document detailing 215 protocols for handling specific situations and a list of nearly 3,000 resources – including shelters, legal services and local law enforcement agencies – available to victims through Polaris network. “It was a very complicated process, and in the calls where that matters most – where you’re helping someone in crisis right now and she’s calling from her hotel room and worried her pimp is going to come back – you really don’t want to spend 10 minutes trying to find the right person to help her,” says Jennifer Kimball, director of Polaris’ data analysis program. “You want to be able to respond immediately.” usnews/news/articles/2015/01/14/how-big-data-is-being-used-in-the-fight-against-human-trafficking
