The Ponte Vecchio is the bridge that crosses the Arno River in the - TopicsExpress

The Ponte Vecchio is the bridge that crosses the Arno River in the center of Florence and the first was originally constructed by Roman soldiers over 2000 years ago (damaged and rebuilted few times until now, but still...wow!) The world loves and recognizes in a blink of an eye Ponte Vecchio, but do you know whats actually ON Ponte Vecchio? In the 1300’s shops began to open up along the bridge, mostly butchers but then, the Medici family had to cross the Ponte Vecchio to get to work every day and did not like the smell of the butcher shops. The Medici gave the butchers six months notice to move and quickly replaced them with gold merchants, with the intent of increasing and represent the florentine artistic prestige. ...So now we have gold shops! Some of them are historic and their artisan are specialized in antique and modern jewelry. (its useless to say that even if your budget do not include a gold bling, the walk is totally worth it! Looking is free!) :)
