The Post and Courier is reporting that City of Charleston Code Enforcement officers are removing murals reminiscent of Shepard Fairey artwork on downtown buildings. The City has removed one such mural at the request of the property owner which is the Post and Courier. When the City receives complaints about such things our code enforcement staff works with the property owner to have the artwork removed. To date the only such complaint we have received is from the Post and Courier. The murals from Shepard Fairey that were installed in five locations over the past week or so were approved by the City as temporary public art installations. The property owner in each case authorized their composition. They were given to the community by the artist in conjunction with an exhibit at the Halsey Gallery at the College of Charleston. You can learn more about the exhibit here (halsey.cofc.edu/). – Tim Keane, Director, Department of Planning, Preservation and Sustainability.
