The Poverty in the Country Should be the Issue When Republican Governor from Ohio John Kasich says “St. Peter isn’t going to ask you how much you did to keep government small. But he is going to ask you what you did for the poor” you know it has become a great concern. People from the Catholic Church have until recently said very little about the poor, but that’s all changed with the new Pope Francis who has made it the center of his crusade. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ran on helping the man on the street and in the ghettoes of Harlem and he won by a land slide. Include President Obama’s inaugural speech; inequality was a center theme. The Middleclass has not yet recovered from the Great Recession. Unemployment is still high and those looking face the fact that there are 3 to 4 people applying for every job available. It has been highlighted in speeches about raising the minimum wage to the need for Fast Food Workers to organize for collective bargaining. It should be the “Battle Cry” for every Democrat running for office. The causes of the unrelenting poverty are many from the fact that no one can live on $7.25 an hour to the lack of labor unions to the lack of good paying factory jobs. Many of these out sourced jobs will never come back but the Republican majority in the House has refused to seriously act on any meaningful job bill. There are many ways that jobs could come back from fixing our crumbling infrastructure to the new green jobs that could be had if congress would take up bills to fund them. There are many lobbyists that are fighting any raise in the minimum wage or equal pay for equal work for women. Our statesmen must be brave and fearless in this battle or all will be lost. If the Middleclass goes down the drain so will the nation.
