The Power of Aerobic Energy To achieve the optimum balance of health and fitness, train your metabolism. Research has shown that if you exercise consistently over a 12-month period, you will form this positive addition for life. Aerobic vs Anaerobic exercise - Anaerobic means, without oxygen. If you are exercising to the point of not being able to carry on a conversation, when youre that winded, your body is burning glycogen (sugar) as its primary fuel while causing the body to store fat. The bodys chemical response to a workout, not the workout itself, determines whether or not it is aerobic or anaerobic. The level of intensity - ones heart rate - is a major factor. At lower heart rates, walking, biking, swimming, dancing, flow/hot yoga are all good examples of aerobic activities. The previous examples at an elevated heart rate or an activity such as weight lifting are examples of anaerobic activities as they require intense exertion or stop and start exertion. The philosophy of no pain, no gain is a fallacy! Pain is typically a signal that you are doing something wrong. Your goal should be to exercise for a longer period of time, but in a totally enjoyable way. When you are doing aerobic training, your body burns fat, not sugar. As a culture, we often want immediate results. Remember, our practice is measured in decades. Make time, dedicate yourself to whatever type exercise suits you, it will pay off in spades!
