The Power of Good. Sir Nicholas Winton, the 105 year old British humanitarian, received the Czech Republic’s highest state medal recently for saving nearly 700 children, mostly Jewish, destined for Nazi death camps, in Czechoslovakia at the onset of World War II. Winton smuggled them to Britain and found them homes. He kept his heroic deeds to himself for almost 50 years. His wife didn’t even know about them until 1988, when she found his scrapbook in the attic, with records, photos, names and documents from his efforts. In 2002, was knighted by the Queen of England in recognition of his work.
