The Power of Words and the Connivance of the Media... When is a pogrom not a pogrom? When its being committed by Israel in Gaza. When is the desecration of a place of worship not the same as the desecration of a place of worship? When one is a synagogue and the other is a mosque. When is the media obliged to report in an objective, balanced manner? Not when Palestinians are being massacred! A number of Jewish synagogues in Paris, Berlin and Brussels, etc have recently been reported as having been defaced/vandalised with graffiti. Some sections of the media have run lurid headlines suggesting that Jews in some of these countries were preparing for exodus to Israel for fear of growing anti-Semitism. There is truth in these these reports in that a Paris synagogues wall was indeed defaced with graffiti; one in Brussels had its windows pelted and the same in Berlin. As odious as these criminal acts are against places of worship, the idea that there is a concerted pogrom being unleashed against Jewish people is rather little more than headline-grabbing tactics by the media which funnily enough otherwise insists on accuracy and balance in reporting about the grave situation in Gaza. Nevertheless, such criminal acts must be condemned unreservedly. Funnily enough (yes, again), the lopsidedness of media reporting goes into pained hair-splitting over even the use of such terms as condemn in relation to the massacre by Israel in Gaza that has resulted in almost 2,000 deaths and widespread devastation, preferring instead to describe individual acts as little more than incidents, skirmishes pending investigation by IDF. A little imbalanced... perhaps? Anyway, here is the result of a quick search of images of places of worship attacked in Gaza: 63 mosques completely destroyed and over a 150 seriously/irreparably damaged. The ferocity of the attacks on such a large number of places of worship has (amongst many other factors) created a situation of utter dread amongst the many of the 1.8m residents of Gaza that they are desperate to flee in a mass exodus to anywhere that will be a place of refuge from the pogrom unleashed upon them by Israel. But these Palestinians have nowhere to flee to - all exits have been blocked for the last seven years. What is happening in Gaza is no short of ethnic cleansing, pogroms and war crimes being systematically committed by Israel.
