The Power of Written Goals This will be my first post this year, so it will be relevant for me to say HAPPY NEW TO YEAR to all friends, colleagues, and readers on this platform. I am sure by now you would have made some New Year Resolutions. Maybe you dont call them resolutions; Goals, plans, promise, determination, whatever you termed them. The synopsis of it all is that you have made up your mind to accomplish some things this year. Alas, psychologists have discovered from their research that most people don’t bring to fruition 10 per cent of their goals and resolutions. I also have experienced something of such in the past. Before this year runs out, I must achieve X! I will surely do Y! I will stop doing Z! And by December, I would discover I‘d only achieved little or none of those goals. But I experienced a significant change, when about three years ago I was introduced to the power in penning down my goals and resolutions. I soon began to achieve large amount of my set goals aftermath. It is on that premise that i will like to relate concisely, reasons why you must take your pen right now, and start writing those goals youve thought through your head. First, it clarifies what you want. It allows you to be clear minded on what you want and why you want it (them). Second, it allows for focus of mind. In times of distraction, uncertainty, and trials, which are inherent components of life, written goals have always proof to be helpful to those that use them. Third, it propels you to take action. Whenever you revisit your written goals, you feel more energized to do the needful. Written goals can be more motivating than any other motivational materials. In addition to that, it allows for the definition of the objectives in achieving each goal. When you have too many thought on your mind, it will be hard for you to articulate them and determine steps to take in achieving each goal. Lastly, ideas dont stay for long. It will be better if you jot them down so as not to forget. RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. Have a life mission statement: this is what your life stands for; what in the final analysis of your life, you wish to achieve; what you want to be said of you after you might have passed away. Its this mission statement that will procreate your goals and resolutions yearly. Its not new; I also have mine: Just four Powerful sentences. It’s what every successful person does! 2. Use I will not I wish to or I want to: while writing your goals be firm and confident about it. For instance, if your goal is academic success, you can write: I will have A’s in all the courses I offer this year. I will get admitted this year. There is power in “I will”. 3. Write down objectives to achieve each goal: for example, if your goal is typical of the aforementioned, your objective should be something like: -read for at least 4hours every day. - attend all classes -stop involving myself in unnecessary discussion etc. Just an example! 4. Have a to-do list: this will guide your actions everyday making sure they are in tandem to your objectives and set goal. I recommend using “phone notes or to-do list”, as that will be easy to delete and re-write new one each day. 5. Be ready to pay the price: Truth be told! You can write 100 goals without achieving any of it if you are not ready to pay the price. And what is the price: Hard work, perseverance, commitment, avoiding procrastination and whatever you feel should the price for your set goal. 6. Commit your ways to God: I am of the utmost conviction that this is the best of all the recommendations. He created you. He knows you. And he wants the best for you. Why dont you take a pen and a book (preferably a jotter) and jot down your goals and resolutions. Write down the steps you need to take for their achievement. Be more resolute than ever to the actualisation of your dreams. Be ready to pay the price! From the deepest place in my heart, I wish you the very best in 2015. Do have a fulfilled and fruitful year!
