The Preservation Society of Charleston will unveil an historic marker at the S.H. Kress & Co. Building at King and Wentworth Streets on Sunday August 4th at 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The historic marker will be on display at the King Street entrance of the Kress Building while the event will take place on the third floor of the Kress Building in the Moore & Van Allen office conference room and deck. Guest Speakers include Minerva Brown King and Cecelia Gordon Rogers, two of the Burke High School Students that were arrested after participating in the Kress lunch counter protest on April 1, 1960. A reception hosted by the Moore & Van Allen Law Firm will immediately follow. The installation of this historic marker is a part of the Society’s 2011 Seven to Save listing of Civil Right Era Sites, celebrating the significance of those historic sites in the Civil Rights movement in Charleston. Charleston, often recognized as one of the South’s most historic cities, is often overlooked as a center of the modern Civil Rights movement. Research and public awareness of these sites is needed to preserve them. In 2011, the Preservation Society placed “Civil Rights Era Sites” on its Seven to Save list. The Society enlisted an alliance of historians and preservationists to create a list of ten historic sites significant to the modern Civil Rights movement. Five sites were selected for permanent historic markers. Once a five & dime store owned by S.H. Kress & Co., this 1930 Art Deco King Street Landmark was selected because it once featured a lunch counter that became the target of Charleston’s first Civil Rights “sit-in”.
