The President of Amnesty Thailand 90/24 Soi Ladprao 1 Jompol, Jatuchak Bangkok 10900 From Male Prisoner Muhamad Anwar Hajjiteh Pattani Central Prison Bana Muang Pattani 94000 International Peace Day, June 21, 2013 Subject: Consideration of the amnesty for the prisoner of national security cases in three southern frontier provinces of Thailand (prisoner of conscience of Patani) Attention: the president of Amnesty International Thailand Due to the violence in the three southern frontier provinces of Thailand (Patani), there has been loss of lives caused by the Thai state, the Patani liberation movement (BRN) and unknown armed forces and combatants. The operation of the liberation movement with an aim to gain bargaining leverage to establish state of Patani has also caused adverse impact on life and property of many citizenries. The aforementioned operation has subsequently led the Thai security forces to resort to blockade, search and seizure tactics including the employment of the special laws and the criminal procedure laws. The court proceeding following the seizures has resulted in many arrested persons both members and non members of the movement, being punished for the crimes they have not committed. Some have been falsely alleged for being disloyal and having alienating opinion from the Thai state and subsequently sentenced to several years’ imprisonment. They are, therefore, the prisoner of conscience or political prisoner. I, therefore, am appealing to the Amnesty Thailand and Amnesty International to take into consideration of the plight of the political and national security detainees in the three southern frontier provinces and four districts in Songkhla province of Thailand. I also urge your good office to work with the Thai government to grant the amnesty to the abovementioned groups of prisoners and detainees as to ensure the smooth and prompt peace process.
