The Presidents State of the Union was objectively a good speech filled with stirring anecdotes, flowery rhetoric, enticing promises and a vision for civil politics in America. Unfortunately, it was also filled with revisionist history, missing details and any evidence of constraint on the role of government. The proposals made largely center on redistribution of wealth--punishing the productive and savers. The reality is that redistributive policies and broadening of the footprint of government have not lifted up the disadvantaged. Instead, those policies have created an atmosphere void of innovation, where success is bought by political influence. A government constrained is a government that cannot benefit the wealthy or influential. A government constrained is one that gives everyone equal opportunity to thrive.
