The Prince of Peace “came not to bring peace upon the earth but a sword.” That is to say, that the peace He brought was built upon the foundation of violence. He made himself the sole human victim of violence and in so doing crushed the powers of sin, evil, and death under his heel, completely obliterating them with violence. He sent his prophets before and his apostles after him to declare this single-handed triumph which we celebrate now, and will enjoy fully at his coming.
