The Protestant gospel is a relatively new HERESY! The Protestant idea that God punished JESUS instead of us for our sins is based specifically on their understanding of Gods Justice. They insist that Justice is about retribution - payback. Do wrong get wrong back. Since man did wrong ... Justice demanded that he be paid back (retribution) and punished. So JESUS died for our sins and was punished instead of us So the theory of western religion goes. But this idea ... Is not in the bible and is only 500 years old ... Dating back to Calvin - a primary father of the Protestant church. If thats true then where did Calvin get this idea from? Lets briefly trace the origins of this belief. For the first 400 years the church fathers in the west and the east believed that Gods Justice was only about restoration - not retribution (payback) Ignatius, the Didache, Athenagoras, Tertullian and the Apostolic Tradition - are representative writers from west and east - spanning 110 till late 3rd century - and all speak with one voice ... Gods Justice was about non retaliation and restoration. It wasnt until the late 4th century that things began to change in the church in the west. It was Augustine, roman lawyer and bishop of Hippo in North Africa that got things changing As a lawyer he was concerned with maintaining peace in the Roman Empire (Pax Romana) and although he maintained that Gods idea about Justice was righting wrongs through restoration ... He introduced the idea to the church at Rome in order to maintain peace in the empire that fathers practise retribution in their own families - to keep peace in the empire. In this way Retributive Justice made its way into the church in the west! But it wasnt until the 11th century that Anselm, bishop in the west, applied the idea of retributive Justice to the death of Jesus. He insisted that man had offended and broke Gods honor. God had two choices: to destroy mankind or provide a way for his honor to be PAID BACK (retributive Justice) Gods honor required SATISFACTION through payback - retribution He said that destroying humanity was not an option So God sent JESUS to repay and do SATISFY Gods honor for mankind by obedience and suffering Gods honor was satisfied in this way Indulgences and penance were other ways that Gods honor could be satisfied. So by paying sums of money people could buy credits with God and so satisfy his wounded honor and buy time out of purgatory This was the birth of the Satisfaction View of the Cross Luther enters the scene in 1500. Both Luther and Calvin break away from the Latin church of the West - Roman Catholic And Take the idea with them that Gods Justice is about retribution Calvin adapted the catholic idea of Christs death as satisfaction for sin But instead of Gods honor requiring satisfaction It was Gods law For Calvin sin focussed on broken laws - not broken honor as for Anselm It was Calvin Who created the Protestant gospel He concluded that Gods law demanded satisfaction The law demanded perfect obedience or death So God transfers the sin and guilt of the world onto JESUS Punishes him instead of us through death And in so doing satisfies the demands of the law! By doing this God was then able to forgive people Thats where the Protestant evangelical charismatic Gospel came from Not from the bible at all!! The Eastern Orthodox Church calls this the recent Latin heresy The death of Jesus is not presented in the New Testament in terms of retributive Justice requiring satisfaction through punishment of sinners The death of Jesus is presented in terms of restorative justice requiring the healing of sinners Doesnt the bible say By his stripes we have been HEALED?!! 1 peter 2:24
