The Public Affairs Officers for our embassies in Santo Domingo and Port au Prince worked together on programs in the Dominican Republic and Haiti from December 1-3. PAO Santo Domingo Jim Russo and PAO Port au Prince Indran Amirthanayagam met Dominican Youth Ambassadors in Baraona, where they discussed their experiences in the US and how Haitians and Dominicans share the same island and the same dreams. The meeting took place while the world began the COP-20 meeting on combating climate change and the students were well informed on practical steps they can take to reduce the carbon footprint in their homes and neighborhoods. The PAOs then visited Love A Child, an NGO working in Fond Parisien, Haiti, near the Dominican border. Love A Child is an orphanage, a school, a radio station, housing for earthquake victims, and will inaugurate next week the Gwo Mache Mirak (the Big Miraculous Market) which will create at least 2400 jobs. On the radio, the PAOs spoke of English language teaching and educational opportunities in the US as well as programs both embassies could do to bring Dominican and Haitian audiences together. In Port au Prince, the PAOs spoke on the English language program of Radio Ibo, engaging in a wide-ranging discussion of Haitian -Dominican relations, English language teaching, poetry, climate change.
