The RB 1 debates have been a depressing encounter. They generally come through as disorganized and the facilitators not in control of the proceedings. The audience seems to be under no control of the facilitators. Yesterdays debate was possibly made worse by the fact that the incumbent MP (Masitara) seemed to have been committed to making false statements as and when it suited him. Most of the time, he presented the false statements knowing that as an MP, he is considered knowledgeable and the other panelists did not have the latest facts about Parliamentary business. Some of the false statements he made are as follows: 1. He stated that the sectional title amendment bill was passed by Parliament to allow citizens to easily purchase apartments in multi-residential units. The truth is that the bill was going to open up for non-citizens to purchase the units and was never adopted by Parliament. 2. When Annah Motlhagodi stated the BCP position of harmonizing the different land tenure system, Masitara responded by saying that this has been achieved through the recently adopted Land Policy. The truth is that the Land Policy was not adopted by Parliament as MPs disagreed with some of the proposals in the policy. 3. On the issue of financing for home ownership, Masitara stated confidently that Parliament had adopted a policy or bill on financial inclusion. There is no such policy or law. 4. On BMC and BDC corruption, he claimed that it was the committee on parastatals that he chairs which blew the whistle. I am a member of the committee and it is true that he chairs it. It is however not true that the committee originated the investigations of BDC and BMC. In fact, the last report of the committee was rejected by Parliament because the Chair had included items that were never discussed by the committee in the report. There was no basis to support the extra issues that Masitara had single handedly incorporated into the report. The committee has not met for about 2 years because the Chair is too embarrassed to face his members and account for his mischief. 5. Masitara also mentioned that the office of the DCEC has been moved from the Office of the President to the Ministry of Defence and Justice. The reverse is true. There were many other false statements made by the MP. I just hope that indeed, lies have short legs. I hope that the other incumbent MPs will not be tempted to use their positions of privilege to get votes by opting for false statements ahead of the truth.
