The Rabbis were scholarly men. They studied the Scriptures and wrote books on theology and doctrine; each generation taking knowledge from the last, adding to it and passing it on to the next. The Rabbinical schools were equal to or better than our finest Seminaries. The Rabbis were proud of their education and tradition. They had studied the prophesies concerning the coming of the Messiah, they had applied the best Hermeneutics and the finest systems of theology available to those Scriptures and based on what they learned and the wisdom of those who came before, they knew that they knew that they knew exactly what would happen when Jesus came. They knew that Messiah would ride in on a horse, take His seat on David’s throne, raise an army and free them from Roman Tyranny. They knew it and they could prove it with Scripture and the writings of venerated Rabbis… Jesus fulfilled more than 300 specific Messianic prophecies but His coming violated rabbinical tradition and proved the most highly venerated Rabbis and their doctrine wrong. Faced with a choice, they chose tradition, teachers and doctrine, rejecting Scripture… …and they missed their Messiah Is it possible that we have the same problem? For hundreds of years scholars have studied and learned about the second coming of Jesus; each generation adding to the knowledge and understanding of the last. Now, we have a picture in our mind… we know exactly how it will all go down. Our knowledge has puffed us up to the point that even though Jesus said to watch, we don’t. Jesus gave very specific signs, we don’t look for them. Doctrine and the movies tell us we don’t have to… Jesus will rescue us before they can hurt us and besides, He is coming “as a thief in the night” You can’t know anyway… or can you? Remember Paul said that, “you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief…” More than one hundred thousand people were slaughtered in the last twelve months… just because they were Christian. Popular doctrine and the Left Behind books and movies have taught us that Jesus is going to rescue us before things get bad. What is this thing about Christians around the world suffering and dying? Five hundred Christian churches burned to the ground in Egypt alone? Isn’t the Rapture supposed to happen first? Are you prepared to look at the real world in the light of Scripture or will you cling to what you learned in Sunday School and like the Rabbis of Jesus day, shut your eyes and stop your ears?
