The Rapture Part 2 Daniel 9:24-27 24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” For you who like to get technical, here is the breakdown. Vs 24 – Israel had been captive for 70 years in Babylon. Now Daniel is told that a period of seventy sevens is in their future and the future of Jerusalem, the holy city. Matthew 27:53. - to finish transgression. Israel is sinning and will bring it to culmination within the 70 weeks. Matthew 23:32. - to make an end of sins. To seal up sin. - to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness. These last two phrases point to the work of the Messiah. Romans 1:16,17. Vs 25 - The anointed one appears only here and in Psalm 2:2. This is the word for Christ (Messiah) that appears in the New Testament. He is also a prince. Acts 3:15. - Two successive blocks of time are given, seven weeks followed by 62 weeks. The first one relates to the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Vs 26 – After the second block of time, 62 weeks, the Messiah is to be cut off speaks of violent death. Isaiah 53:8. - shall have nothing meaning he will die without children. - The people of the prince that shall come (General Titus) shall destroy the rebuilt city and the rebuilt temple. There will be a great war, but the outcome has been settled in heaven. See Jesus at: Luke 21:20; 23:28; - A flood in figurative language is an army. Isaiah 8:7-8 - Jesus referred to this verse in Matthew 24:15. Vs 27 – Jesus used the week to define and confirm a new covenant. In the first part of the week he confirmed the covenant and in the second part he supervised the invitation for the lost to be a part of the covenant. Heb.10:4-9. - The death of Jesus was at the end of the sixty ninth week All of these events later happened, in the same order in which they are described in Daniel 9:24-26: 1. After the Medo-Persians had conquered the Babylonian empire about 2540 years ago, they ruled a vast empire that included the land of Israel. About 2446 years ago (about 445 BC), Persian king gave permission to the Jews to rebuild the Temple and Jerusalem, which was still in ruins after having been destroyed earlier by the Babylonians. 2. The Jews rebuilt the Temple and the city of Jerusalem. This took them 49 years. (seven sevens) 2 Chronicles 38:17-23, Jeremiah 25:1-14, Jeremiah 29, Ezra and Nehemiah 3. Then, in about 33 AD, Jesus entered Jerusalem as the Messiah who had been promised by Old Testament prophets. But, many people rejected Jesus as the Messiah and He was crucified by the Romans. 4. About 40 years after Jesus was crucified, the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. (General Titus. The Temple has not been rebuilt since then). How Daniel 9:24-26 was Fulfilled to the day according to scholars such as Josh McDowell First, McDowell, and other scholars, separate the prophecy into three parts: 1. The 7 sevens in Daniel 9:25. 2. The 62 sevens in Daniel 9:25. 3. And the 70th seven in Daniel 9:27. Then, they combine the first two periods for a total of 69 sevens. They combined the first two periods because it is at after the completion of those two periods that the anointed one appears, and thats what we are trying to calculate - when the anointed one was supposed to appear. Next, they interpret the sevens as seven years or periods of seven years, rather than a period of seven days or seven weeks or seven months. Part of the reason that this is interpreted as years is because of the reference to years in Daniel 9:2. (Daniel 9:2 refers to the seventy years prophecy that Jeremiah spoke of in Jeremiah 25). - This other prince will make Jerusalem desolate and it will have a full end. All Jews were removed and not allowed to view the location for more than 30 years. The end of the world is not in view. - These choices have already been determined in heaven. Gods wrath is certain. At this point, were adding the 7 sevens and the 62 sevens for a total of 69 sevens. And we are interpreting the 69 sevens to mean 69 periods of seven years, for a total of 483 years. So, we are saying that there would be a period of 483 years from the time that a decree is given to rebuild Jerusalem to the time that a Messiah is to appear. Part 3 tomorrow........
