The Reading High Red Knights (7-4) used a strong third quarter to break open a tight game to cruise to a 69-49 victory over the Governor Mifflin Mustangs (5-6) at Mifflin tonight. Tyree Gibson played a strong game as he scored 19 points including 8 in the decisive third quarter. Lonnie Walker, who returned to the lineup after healing from an injury, also played well at both ends of the floor and scored 16 points. Walker and GIbson nailed consecutive three pointers early in that third quarter and the Red Knights were rolling. Reading used an 11 point run in the first quarter to turn an early 4-2 deficit into a 13-4 lead. The first quarter ended with Reading leading 13-7. The Red Knights continued to build the lead in the second quarter when they led 20-11. But some defensive lapses led to several easy Mifflin buckets and the half ended with Reading clinging to a 24-20 lead. Readings rebounding in the first half was a key as the Red Knights had an 18-9 advantage on the boards including 10 offensive rebounds. Reading shot 9 for 12 from the field in the third quarter as they built their lead to 42-29 going into the final quarter. Reading continued to run away with the game in the final quarter when Raul Barbosa, who got his first start of the year, scored several baskets off of nice feeds. The game was a satisfying way to start the new year and it helped build Readings Berks record to 3-0 heading into Thursday nights home game against Daniel Boone. The Red Knights were winners three times on the night. The Red Knights freshmen team put on an impressive performance as they crushed Mifflins freshmen, 61-29. The Reading JVs also defeated Mifflin, 43-37.
