The Record Searchlight is reporting that Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell clarified a controversial rule requiring permits for commercial photography in national wilderness areas. The government’s proposal has upset First Amendment advocates, who call it vague and too broad. They are worried it would stifle free speech and trample journalists’ rights to cover the news. “The U.S. Forest Service remains committed to the First Amendment,” Tidwell said in a statement released Thursday. “To be clear, provisions in the draft directive do not apply to news gathering or activities.” Breaking news and feature news coverage, and the filming of news and educational documentaries would not have to secure a permit, Tidwell said.
