The Red Crossbills were very active. 11/11/14 at 2:33pm. The male is firebrick red. The female is pale yellow. They were frantically foraging and moving constantly…hard to capture a quiet moment. I suspect this was a method of coping with the sub-zero temps. Their beaks are very effective as specialized tools for removing pine cone seeds. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/1250s, ISO 400, lens focal length 400mm.
