The Refugee Problem According to the UNHCR there are 42.5 million displaced people world-wide in 2012 of these 15.4 million were registered as Refugees in 2012 approximately 23,000 people leave their homes daily to seek protection. Why should this be so, according to the definition of a refugee they are escaping a natural disaster which although are more prevalent today are not so noticeable and often those refugees normally return to their home land when possible. Another reason is persecution this by definition occurs to a minimal number of people whose views are better suited to another land thus making up a small number of the refugee total. This leaves people seeking to escape war of whom it appears to make up the majority of the 42.5 million displaced people. This makes the answer to the refugee problem obvious, STOP FIGHTING AMONGST OURSELVES, “STOP THE WARS”. Easier said than done you say? If all we had to fight with were sticks and stones and the occasional bread knife how many homes and farms would be destroyed? The number of people killed would be greatly reduced. We as a people would be forced to seek alternate methods of solving our disputes; we might even have to negotiate in a meaningful manner, realistic negotiations. If we were to take the biblical quote literally “Turn our swords into plough shears” then perhaps we could feed, clothe and shelter the world’s population without the need for anybody to leave their homes; Refugee problem solved.
