The Regional Hispanic Institute is proud to announce Irene Huerta as Mujer del Año. Awards will be presented during the RHIs awards gala on November 22 at The Maya Hotel...Long Beach Long Beach. Irene Huerta grew up in Wilmington, California, where she attended secondary school and high school. She immediately joined the workforce after Phineas Banning High School. She spent many years working at Todd Shipyards before it closed their doors in 1989, and then spent 15 years at Nissan North America as a Senior Staff Accountant before its move to Tennessee. In 2004, she began to work for International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 13 as the assistant to the President. She also works part-time as a casual longshorewoman since 2006. Over the next few years she also actively involved herself in the community. She is the co-founder of California Families Against Solitary Confinement, she serves as an elected board member for United Wilmington Youth Foundation (UWYF), San Pedro Democratic Club and Latino Democrats of Los Angeles County. These years were filled with work and many peaceful protests. Her passion to see positive change in the community led her in 2012, to become politically involved in the Los Angeles Mayor’s race. She spent countless hours on the Mayor Eric Garcetti campaign, which ultimately led to victory for the candidate and city of Los Angeles. Currently, she works at ILWU Local 13, is a community activist and political strategist. She’s happily married to Gabriel and resides in Wilmington with her three handsome sons and three rescued canines that she considers her fur babies.
