The Republic of Pisa was founded in the eleventh century . Pisa in 1016 , thanks to the alliance with Genoa, defeated the Saracens , conquered Corsica and Sardinia judged of Cagliari and Gallura and gained control of the Tyrrhenian Sea , a century later freed the Balearic Islands . The ancient port of Pisa , now buried by the flooding of the Arno, was located north of the city of Livorno.
