The Retreat is taking on a life with a rustic Victorian flavoring. The 125 year old Cypress siding will soon have oil to bring it back to life and help seal it, close up the cracks a bit from being so dry, and to bring out its rich deep color to mix with the white Milk paint from a century past. This example of a dormer on the roof in the walking area of the loft actually adds and entire living area above. While only about 310 sf of taxable square footage below, the added loft space of almost 260 sf will take it up to 570 sf of living area which would hold two bedrooms upstairs, a day bed below, kitchen, bath with shower, and dining area besides the big living area and porch. 95% Pure Salvage Living in the form of an organic house. Nearly the entire house is effectively the cells of trees that were hundreds of years old when slaughtered and the thin slices of cellular tissue, dried out, are what form the house. I give it the greatest respect and honor for it is indeed still holding the RNA, mitochondria, DNA, and what it took to be alive, less the water. As humans we are 90% water, and the trees too were grown with water that once extracted, leaves what we call wood flooring, siding, and all the other parts you see that formed this house except the nails and glass. The glass is sand melted and formed from a bubble blown and cut, then laid flat. It was blown from glass heated by coal that was hauled from the coal mines by children at 12 years old when that was formed. The energy we save by using the same glass again, more than a century later, is enough to heat this energy efficient house for the next ten winters with plenty more left over. Using it for another century also pays proper respect to the work of those children, our great, great, grandparents who lived in tiny houses and expected no more, if they were lucky enough to have that. Men worked 352 days a year with no vacations or sick pay, no guarantees of work in the days that this was created. In Texas, the lumber industry did not have to pay with a dollar bill, yes real money, until the early 1930s, taking away their company store banking system for their employees that lasted for 60 years while thei lumber industry was king in Texas. With that little bit of history, I hope you can truly appreciate why I have a passion for saving what our forefathers have gifted us with for our grandchildren who will never see it or know it existed if we do not act now to use it again instead of throwing it all away. They will be import dependent forever if we trash the resources that made us great with no respect or clue to their value until they are gone. Please check out the Pure Salvage Living website and join me in the Renaissance that will play a part in opening up these opportunities to create a new industry out of our past treasures. Tiny Texas Houses is the manifestation of this ethos and the site is designed to teach others, provide a path to empowerment and independence through salvage mining and salvage building. Please visit, learn, and help make a difference we can all benefit from around the world and for the 7 generations yet to come. Darby 2014
