The Reunion is the soundtrack to a family reunion. The ukelele kicks off the tune as if a host opens the front door and says to you come on in, and you walk in to the warm company of your sizeable extended family and a few close friends of the family just having small talk. The guitars layer and build as if conversations get happier and louder in the house as the evening progresses, while the cellos put a bow on the arrangement by adding warmth like a fireplace, soft background conversations, and old photo albums being pulled out. The two small sections where the song quickly takes a more solem tone is due to talks of a loved one who had passed away and children that are now all grown up. The main break in the song eludes to the quite moment when a grandparent says the grace for the food and everyone in the house listens intently. It quickly builds back up to casseroles being passed around at the dinner table, laughing, and those that started the evening being reserved now joining in on all the conversations. Towards the end, instrument layers are taken away as family members say their goodbyes but leave the host with hugs and thank yous. This song was originally called Playthings because my two sons were featured in it clapping and laughing and talking, and because Im using their toy instruments throughout the song (uke, toy piano, toy bells). Although theyre still clapping in the song (along with Karley Guadalupe), I took out my boys laughing because I wanted the song to appeal to more people than just my own family. Aimee Norris tracked the cellos and did an amazing job.
