The Richmond RiverRats continued their winning ways on Saturday night as they defeated the 3rd place Butler Blue Sox 5-4. Richmond was propelled to victory by the pitching of Patrick Van Daalwyk. Van Daalwyk pitched his third straight game of eight innings. He allowed eight hits, four runs, zero walks with four strikeouts. Scott Ashford came on in the 9th to earn his first save of the season, striking out two in the process. Assistant Manager Patrick Flanagan spoke highly of the pitchers’ performances, “Van D (Van Daalwyk) does not have the kind of stuff to blow pitches by hitters, but his pitches around the knees will get us the outs we need. He always does a great job of putting us in a position where we can win a game…And for Scott Ashford, he has come a long way. We are really proud of him when we can put him on the mound in a pressure situation to close it out for us.” Saturday marked the third straight game where the RiverRats managed ten or more hits. However, the hits did not produce the runs needed to win. In the bottom of the seventh, Richmond managed to load the bases on three hits, but the runs three runs came in off of two walks and a sacrifice fly. Assistant Manager Patrick Flanagan was quick to point out, “A win is a win…We need the hits to drop into the gaps with runners in scoring position, but we will take the runs when they are given to us.” Jacob Bosiokovic, who went 1-2 with a sac-fly and two RBIs, lead Richmond for all batters. Three other RiverRats racked up two hits on the night as well. With the win, Richmond improved to 19-28, while Butler falls to 26 and 21. Both teams will be in action on Sunday as they close out their series at 6:05 pm.
