The Riots nm_august_2013_riots The Riots - Time For Truth LP I don’t wish to sound too ignorant about world mod affairs, but I was genuinely surprised to learn the Riots are from Moscow. Listening to this LP, you would hard pushed to realise they are from Russia, because the sound, the songs and production is totally British mod/new wave inspired. Yes, the influence is derived from the usual suspects; Weller, Jam, Brit Pop, Marriott, Townshend etc, but I would guess this shows the power of the internet. It does have the ability to take mod culture to the most unlikeliest of places, but that can only be a good thing. It then inspires others to put their own interpretations on it and if this is the kind of top quality that comes as a result, then I’m all for it. From the outset with ‘Time For Truth’, you get a good sense of what is to come. This opener has that kind of ‘anthemic’ quality we see quite often here in the UK. Then you find the slightly Zombies influenced ‘Hate To See You Go’ followed by ‘One Step’ which has shades of early Elvis Costello. On this album of surprises, ‘Brixton’ gives us a glimpse of the Moscovite version of two-tone. This is a very good album and I’m looking forward to seeing them live when they tour in the UK for selected dates very soon.
