The Robert Street reconstruction bids have come in, and the result is not in our favor. Only two bids were received, and the lowest bid was around 40% higher than estimated. I am disappointed in the number of bids received and the cost proposals that were presented. Staff is reviewing the bids to determine why they came out this way, and will be presenting the Council with recommendations and options. One thing we learned is that public works projects are coming in high across the state, and that there are a number of projects already underway that hamper the Citys ability to get competitive bids. As a steward of your tax dollars I cannot in good conscience ask residents and businesses to absorbe even more costs on this project. I will be recommending to the Council that the bids be rejected, and that they re-examine the project. But absent the State assuming the additional costs, it is unlikely that the project will move ahead as planned at this time.
