The Role of Human Resources in Today’s Workplace Human Resource Professionals have a difficult job that most people do not quite understand, nor appreciate. HR professionals are supposed to be developers of people, systems and environments, but most companies have them cornered into performing duties and responsibilities. HR Professionals work in a closed, confidential and secretive manner on daily basis which has formed a cocoon around the functions and the profession itself. However the role of HR is changing in modern times. It is now becoming a “micro” role (more hands on) than the “macro” role (benefits, downsizing, policy administration etc). HR function needs a massive change with the changing workplace. Challenges will be to direct, guide and help change the environments. They have to overcome many hurdles within the changing environment now and in the next 5 years. Now is the junction where opportunity and choice intersect and create the ability for dedicated HR professionals. HR professionals can create an “Impact” in their organization by keeping themselves updated, by attending various seminars, trainings. Learn and adopt change management, collaborative skills and operations. HR is not a closed community anymore. Meeting and interacting with Entrepreneurs will give appreciations for disciplines outside HR. The future is in start-up and smaller companies. Knowing more about the people in your company, the customers, vendors, board members and other professionals will also help in shaping up your knowledge and share experiences. Reading books about people, ideas, innovation, marketing, sales, and technology will be useful in change management process. Interact with people and get to know their emotions. Technology can be a blessing however it can never take the place of reading someone’s eyes and voice inflections. Leading an organization through change requires that you change. HR professionals will need to learn the skills required to be at the core of fluid organizations. HR professionals have the ability and opportunity to become key players in the Work Place revolution. They will simply need to be open to new opportunities through new methodologies.
