The Root of Good Health - Video: A new tool for improving sanitation This video documents a Participatory Video (PV) workshop facilitated by #Azafady in a remote community called Beandry in South East Madagascar. Azafady has been using Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in Beandry since 2011. The original project was funded by The Silver Lady Fund. 14 months later the community was verified as 100% Open Defecation Free. The first village in the Mahatalaky Rural Commune to receive this status. However over time many of the latrines fell into disrepair and by mid 2013 it was estimated that latrine use had fallen by 50%. Azafady decided that Participatory Video could be used as a unique tool for re-engaging the whole community and to try and re-motivate people to use their latrines again. During the workshop 6 participants (3 male and 3 female) representing the 6 hamlets that make up Beandry made a film to educate on the importance of good health and sanitation. The film, entitled Cleanliness is the root of good health, was screened at the end of the workshop and is now being distributed throughout the community on DVD and to other communities in the surrounding area. It will provide the community leaders in Beandry and elsewhere with a new tool to educate on the importance of good sanitation in a region where 10% of all deaths of children under 5 is attributed to diarrhoea.
