The Rules: Dont take too long to think about it. Fifteen authors (poets included) whove influenced you and that will always stick with you. List the first 15 you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Im not tagging anyone except Pete Aldin, who tagged me. If you want to play, be my guest. Heres my list: 1. Stephen King, for his masterful short stories and indispensable book on writing. 2. Neil Gaiman, who may be the most versatile writer of all time. And, one of the best. 3. Terry Pratchett, who rarely fails to make me laugh. 4. Roger Zelazny, who made worlds you stepped right into. 5. Robert B. Parker for his easy flowing dialogue and for Hawk. Hawk is cool as hell. 6. Alan Moore for Watchmen and many others. 7. Dean Koontz for pointing out that all kinds of seemingly banal stuff can be really scary. 8. William Gibson for pointing out the dark and probable future we face. 9. Gillian Flynn - a recent, but potent influence. If you havent read her, stop whatever youre doing and get one of her books. Now. 10. Piers Anthony, for childhood fantasies and for a creepy-ass anthology I read in high school. 11. Cormac McCarthy, for the amazing things he does with words. 12. Daniel Woodrell, for Winters Bone, a book that has stayed with me since I read it and likely always will. 13. Ray Bradbury, who could rock a story like nobody else. 14. H.P. Lovecraft, without whom the universe would be much less interesting. 15. George Orwell, who opened my eyes to many terrifying possibilities.
