The Russian invasion of Ukraine reminds me of something that happened to me in the Summer of 1968. That spring there was a popular uprising in Czechoslovakia against USSR control. Soviet tanks had rolled into Czechoslovakia to put down the rebellion. I was on a French train. We were about to cross the border into Czechoslovakia, when the train stopped. Soviet soldiers came on board. All priests, lawyers, and journalists were taken off the train and left at the border. The rest of us were allowed to proceed.
