The Rwenzori region in western Uganda is home to a network of protected areas in the Albertine Rift. Throughout much of the eco-region, human population density has placed considerable pressure on remaining forest resources as most families live on subsistence farming. While the activities of rural people have destroyed and fragmented habitats of this eco-region, presenting huge concerns for conservation efforts in the area, with the support of the European Union, local communities are getting involved in safeguarding their natural heritage. The EU is supporting the sustainable financing of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park project, whose overall objective is to ensure that the biodiversity and ecosystem services of the park are secured to contribute to local livelihoods as well as national development. The project also seeks to boost community based tourism. Visiting the area on Thursday August 13, 2014, H.E Ambassador, Kristian Schmidt, the EU Head of Delegation, led by example in planting a mahogany tree at the field office of the project implementing partners, WWF and Uganda Wild Life Authority in Kasese town. He also embarked on a trek up the slopes of the Rwenzori ranges to assess tree planting efforts. The EU Head also visited the impressive Ihane Womens Group who are engaged in bee keeping as an alternative source of livelihood. Our roving camera captured these colorful moments.
