The STA lost a great friend and backpacker tonight with the death of Gary Rue. Gary was hiking with me and others as part of the Friday night hike before the Conference tomorrow. One moment we were laughing at the top of Eagle Lake Trail right at the intersection with the Trace and the next minute we were performing CPR trying to safe our friend. Billy Sherlin and Karen Weber gave Gary cpr for over 20 minutes while we waited for rescue help from Morehead. We were over a mile up the steep hill and no way to get a helicopter into the site. The paramedics did 25 more minutes before giving Gary up to the great hike guide. We miss him and there is a whole now in all our lives.
