The STRINGS behind the SOUND - 6 Homemade Instruments The Cigar Box Guitar Reaching further back, and popularized during the 1920 / 30s Great Depression Era, CBGs were the first instruments of many fine musicians. Often made using discarded materials; broom sticks, bailing wire, and old boxes or tins, these rudimentary instruments frugally replaced unaffordable store bought instruments. A single string was called a Diddley Bow. Reversing this name, is how acclaimed 1950s performer Bo Diddley created his name. To ease construction, they were often built fretless, like a violin or an early gourd banjo. Today, 3 and 4 string fretted models are most popular, and the craft has been elevated up to professional status with builds being found on the market for sale. They are not toys or One Trick Ponies either. String selection and tuning is only limited by the creative of the player. A great example of Americana folk craft. youtu.be/sqLc5zjp-po
