The Sahabas their Virtues from Ahaadeeth: 1) It was narrated from Abd-Allaah ibn Masood (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The best of the people are my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2652) and Muslim (2533) The prophet (s.a.w) also said : My ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of whom will be in Hell except one group. They said: Who are they, O Messenger of Allaah? He said: (Those who follow) that which I and my companions follow. [Ref: This is mentioned in the hadeeth of Abd-Allaah ibn Amr which was recorded and classed as hasan by al-Tirmidhi (2641). It was also classed as hasan by al-Iraaqi in Ahkaam al-Quraan (3/432), al-Iraaqi in Takhreej al-Ihya (3/284) and al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.] 2) It was narrated that al-Bara (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: The Ansaar: no one loves them but a believer and no one hates them but a hypocrite. Whoever loves them, Allaah will love him, and whoever hates them, Allaah will hate him. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3672; Muslim, 75. Alee -Radi Allaahu anhu- mentions that the Messenger of Allaah ordered Ibn Masood to climb up a tree to bring something down from it, and his companions looked at the shins of Abdullaah bin Masood while he was climbing the tree, and they began to laugh at the thinness of his shins! So the Messenger of Allaah said: What causes you to laugh?! The leg of Abdullaah is heavier in the scales on the Day of Judgement than mount Uhud. [Recorded by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad and authenticated by Shaykh Ahmad Shakir.(920), Taken from Siyaar Alaam an-Nubalaa & Thahdheeb at-thahdheeb] 3) It was narrated from Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abdullah ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever wants to follow an example, let them follow the example of those who have passed away, for those who are living are not safe from fitnah (temptation). They are the sahabah (companions) of muhammad. They are the best of this ummah, the purest in heart, the deepest in knowledge, and the farthest from false display of piety. They are the people whom allah chose to be the companions of his prophet and to convey his religion. So acknowledge their superiority and imitate their way and behavior, for they were following the straight path. (Ibn Abdul-Bar, Jami Bayan Al-Ilm wa Fadlihi, Chapter on undesirable debate, dispute, and argument, vol. 2, p. 947, no. 1810, (verified by Al-Zuhayry); and Abu Ismail Al-Harawy, Dham Al-Kalam wa Ahlihi, vol. 4, p. 38, no. 758, verified by Abdullah Al-Ansary. Related by Abu Nuaym in Al-Hilyah from Abdullah ibn Umar, vol. 1, pp. 305- 306) 4) Ibn Masood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: Allaah looked into the hearts of His slaves, and He saw that the heart of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the best of peoples hearts, so He chose him for Himself and sent him with His message. Then He looked into the hearts of His slaves after the heart of Muhammad, and He found that the hearts of his companions were the best of peoples hearts, so He made them the supporters of His Prophet, who fought for His religion. So whatever the Muslims think is good, is good before Allaah, and whatever they think is bad, is bad before Allaah. End quote. Narrated by Ahmad in al-Musnad (1/379). The scholars of hadeeth said: Its isnaad is hasan. It is reported that Abdullah b. Masud - Allah be pleased with him - said: The people will remain upon goodness as long as knowledge comes to them from the Companions of Allahs Messenger - Allahs praise and peace be upon him, and from their seniors. But when knowledge comes to them from their minors, that is when they will be destroyed. Ibn Abd Al-Barr, Jami Bayan Al-Ilm wa Fadlihi article 1060. Note: Being upon a good and right path is based on following the knowledge of the Companions and seniors: scholars and people who adhere to the Sunnah, whereas taking knowledge from minors like ignorants and heretics is a sign of destruction 5) When one of the Sahaabah sinned by telling Quraysh that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was coming with the army during the year of the Conquest, and Umar ibn al-Khattaab wanted to execute him, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: He was present at Badr, and you do not know, perhaps Allaah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do what you wish, for I have forgiven you. Narrated by al-Bukhaari and Muslim (2494). 6) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, The stars are the custodians (guardians) of the sky, so when the stars depart, there will come to the sky what is promised for it (i.e. on the Day of Judgment). I am the custodian of my Companions, so when I depart, there will come to my Companions what is promised for them (i.e. great trials and tribulations). My Companions are the custodians for my Ummah, so when my Companions depart, there will come to my Ummah what is promised for it (i.e. schisms, spread of innovations etc). [Sahih Muslim 4: 1344)/ Sahih - related by Muslim (16/82), Ahmad (4/398) and al-Baghawi in Sharh as-Sunnah (14/71-72) ] 7) Narrated Abdullaah bin Amr bin Al-Aas: My father got me married to a lady of a noble family, and often used to ask my wife about me, and she used to reply, What a wonderful man he is! He never comes to my bed, nor has he approached me since he married me. When this state continued for a long period, my father told the story to the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam who said to my father, Let me meet him. Then I met him and he asked me,How do you fast? I replied, I fast daily, He asked, How long does it take for you to finish the recitation of the whole Quraan? I replied, I finish it every night. On that he sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, Fast for three days every month and recite the Quraan (and finish it) in one month. I said, But I have power to do more than that. He said, Then fast for three days per week. I said, I have the power to do more than that. He said, Therefore, fast the most superior type of fasting, (that is, the fasting of (prophet) Dawood who used to fast every alternate day; and finish the recitation of the whole Quraan in seven days. I wish I had accepted the permission of Allaahs Apostle as I have become a weak old man. It is said that Abdullaah used to recite one-seventh of the Quraan during the daytime to some of his family members, for he used to check his memorization of what he would recite at night during the daytime so that it would be easier for him to read at night. And whenever he wanted to gain some strength, he used to give up fasting for some days and count those days to fast for a similar period, for he disliked to leave those things which he used to do during the lifetime of the Prophet. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4689)] 8) And Jaabir (r.a) said: On the day of al-Hudaibiyah, the Messenger of Allaah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said: Today, you are the best people on Earth. And we were 1,400 then. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (4154), Muslim (1856)] Concerning the participants of the treaty of Hudaybiyah Allaah said: Indeed, Allaah was pleased with the believers when they gave the Bayah (pledge) to you (O Muhammad - sallallahu alaihi wa sallam -) under the tree, He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down As-Sakeenah (calmness and tranquility) upon them, and He rewarded them with a near victory. [Al Fath: 18] 9) Qatadah reported: It was asked of Ibm Umar, Did the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, laugh? He said, Yes and the faith in their hearts was greater than the mountains. [Hilyat al-Awliya li Abu Naeem p. 311, Hasan] 10) Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah (salallahu alaihi wasalam) said: This (i.e. Saad ibn Muadh) is the one at whose death the Throne shook, the gates of heaven were opened for him and seventy thousand angels attended his funeral. It squeezed* him once then released him. [Sahih Al-Bukhari 1/536; Sahih Muslim 2/294; Jami At-Tirmidhi 2/225 and Sunan An-Nasai, Hadeeth No. 2057. Graded saheeh by Shaikh Al-Albani in Saheeh Sunan An-Nasai, Hadeeth No. 2055] 11) It was narrated that Jaabir ibn Abdullaah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: When Al-Khandaq (the Trench) was dug, I saw the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the state of severe hunger. So I returned to my wife {She is Sahlah bint Masood ibn Aws Adh-Dhafriyyah Al-Ansaariyyah, may Allaah be pleased with her. [An-Nawawi; Sharh Saheeh Muslim (17/120)]} and said, Have you got anything (to eat), for I have seen Allaahs Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, in a state of severe hunger. She brought out for me, a bag containing one Saa (double handful) of barley, and we had a domestic she-animal (i.e. a kid) which I slaughtered then, and my wife ground the barley and she finished at the time I finished my job (i.e. slaughtering the kid). Then I cut the meat into pieces and put it in an earthenware (cooking) pot, and returned to Allaahs Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him . My wife said, Do not disgrace me in front of Allaahs Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and those who are with him. So I went to him and said to him secretly, O Allaahs Messenger! I have slaughtered a she-animal (i.e. kid) of ours, and we have ground a Saa of barley which was with us. So please come, you and another person along with you. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his voice and said, O people of Trench ! Jaabir has prepared a meal so let us go. Allaahs Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, Do not put down your earthenware meat pot (from the fireplace) or bake your dough till I come. So I came (to my house) and Allaahs Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, too, came, proceeding before the people. When I came to my wife, she said, May Allaah do so-and-so to you. I said, I have told the Prophet of what you said. Then she brought out to him (i.e. the Prophet the dough, and he spat in it and invoked for Allaahs Blessings in it. Then he proceeded towards our earthenware meat-pot and spat in it and invoked for Allaahs Blessings in it. Then he said (to my wife). Call a lady-baker to bake along with you and keep on taking out scoops from your earthenware meat-pot, and do not put it down from its fireplace. They were one-thousand (who took their meals), and by Allaah they all ate, and when they left the food and went away, our earthenware pot was still bubbling (full of meat) as if it had not decreased, and our dough was still being baked as if nothing had been taken from it. [Ref: Reported in Saheeh Al-Bukhaari no. (4101 and 4102) and Saheeh Muslim no. (5436)] 12) A man came to the Prophet. The Prophet (s.a.w) sent a messenger to his wives (to bring something for that man to eat) but they said that they had nothing except water. Then Allahs Messenger (s.a.w) said, Who will take this (person) or entertain him as a guest? An Ansar man said, I. So he took him to his wife and said to her, Entertain generously the guest of Allahs Messenger (s.a.w) She said, We have got nothing except the meals of my children. He said, Prepare your meal, light your lamp and let your children sleep if they ask for supper. So she prepared her meal, lighted her lamp and made her children sleep, and then stood up pretending to mend her lamp, but she put it off. Then both of them pretended to be eating, but they really went to bed hungry. In the morning the Ansari went to Allahs Messenger (s.a.w) who said, Tonight Allah laughed or wondered at your action. Then Allah revealed: But give them (emigrants) preference over themselves even though they were in need of that And whosoever is saved from the covetousness Such are they who will be successful.
