The Sahara Desert or “Great Desert” in Arabic. The Sahara extends from the eastern foothills of the Atlas Mountains to Egypt. At one time it was a fertile area with many lakes, now it is extremely arid, although there are fertile areas known as oases. Sahara desert receives only 8 inches of rainfall per year in some parts and 1inch is other parts. It is the second largest desert in the world, after Antarctica (cold desert), and is the largest hot desert in the world. It is located in northern Africa, spanning 12 different countries. The countries which Sahara desert encompasses include Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara. Natural stones like the desert rose, a crystal formation found in the Sahara, which makes a very decorative object dart. The history of the desert dates back to 3 million years ago.
