The Sand Hills of south Georgia and Alabama lie just above the fall line of the southeastern US, where the hillier regions of the Deep South make a final drop to the very flat Coastal Plains. Comprised mainly of deep, nutrient-poor sands these hills support a significantly different vegetation from that which is found elsewhere regionally. Many of the species are different, and a number of them are rare or not found elsewhere. The low nutritional content of the sandy soil and the sharp drainage, especially in periodic droughts, combine to keep the forests more stunted here. Here is a small selection of Sand Hills inhabitants in a couple of state preserves in Talbot County, Georgia.
