The Scoop Week 32 Onions! Due to some errant frost, a portion - TopicsExpress

The Scoop Week 32 Onions! Due to some errant frost, a portion of the Lockyer Valley onion harvest is on its way to us a month or so early as white onions. With a shorter shelf life and sharper flavour, they are a lovely little silver lining for farmers in frost season. Organic beetroot, Russian garlic, turmeric, capsicum, cauliflowers, celery, Dutch Cream and Nicola spuds, Jap pumpkin orange sweet potato, Roma tomatoes, beautiful bunches of baby turnips (watch for a recipe card to go with these beauties) and zucchini complete the certified organic tableau. No less gorgeous is our non-certified, but still chem-free range of broccoli, spring onions, lettuce leaf mix, baby spinach leaves, Granny Smith and Sundowner apples, avocadoes, Murcott mandarins, blood oranges and Packham pears. Keith returns this week with his excellent, super-local kale and Deb is bringing silverbeet fresh from her home garden. All members are encouraged to bring in their excess produce from their gardens, the value of the goods sold can be credited to your account. Please let Sonja know a week before time if you have produce to contribute. After spending the last three years exploring the retail side of the local food chain, Deborah’s latest endeavour turns the spotlight to supply. RUGI – Rural and Urban Growers of Ipswich will seek to network, inspire and train a new generation of farmers in our area, from commercial growers disenfranchised by the supermarket duopoly to keen home enthusiasts looking to move towards making a living out of their love. Our first meet and greet is on August 17th 12pm to 2pm at Deb’s home “Tickleberry Farm”. Please call 0478355628, find the event on the FB page or bend Deb’s ear (if you can catch her) on Tuesday night if you’d like to attend. You will all have all received your 2014 member survey via email, please take the time to fill it out (those that have already, we are working on the glitch in one question, thanks for letting us know). It provides invaluable information for us to improve and move forward. Once the data has been collated, we will hold a brainstorming session using the survey findings to look at a brave new chapter in the life of the co-op. Mark your diary: Two excellent speakers from Vanuatu will talk about their work on Growing Food in a Changing Climate. Shirley Laban from Oxfam and Mala Silas from Care will be in Brisbane for a public forum: Thursday August 14, 6 for 6.30pm til 8pm, Abel Smith Lecture Theatre Uni of Qld, St Lucia.
