The Secret Life of the Bees by Sue Monk kidd.... ! Not a book that would appeal to your intellect or challenge your mind....on the contrary !!! It has a folk lore touch, fairy tale plot, mystical ambience , though rich in language, lyricism ...but conveys a few universal truths. A very very far cry form Turn in the South Written by V.S Naipaul....but touches on the same issue of racism and tough times that both the Blacks and Whites went through ,during the Civil rights movement in America. This is set in South Carolina and seen through the eyes of a little girl...with more stories wound around her which does not trivilise this issue but gives the story a different charm !!! Unrealistic in many ways.....yet it has touched me so ! Probably because we all want to believe in miracles....and we are moved when stories are told from the heart....The heart tends to rule the head at times !! Sharing some of the quotes, while I am reflecting on the same.... “There is nothing perfect,” August said from the doorway. “There is only life.” (difficult to accept but the truth !!) “Most people don’t have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don’t know anything about” ( Isnt this true of most families ? ) “If you need something from somebody always give that person a way to hand it to you.” ( Thought this was a real sweet one...) I hadnt known this was possible...to reject people for being WHITE (Hahahaaa..righteous indignation ...is it ? ) Up until then id thought white people and colored people getting along was the big aim, but after that I decided everybody being colorless together was a better plan ( A profound thought for the times then...) “Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we cant remember who we are or why were here.” ( True again. Remembered Roots here ) Sitting in the continent and reading this brings it closer to home !! Beautiful folk lore with beautiful thoughts...Sue Monk kidd...u r really a cute kid !!!
