The Secret to Being Good At Prayer Tadd Tatum, Fuse Worship Director It’s dinnertime. Everyone is laughing and having a good time. Someone is asked to pray, and suddenly the demeanor of the entire room changes. Then somebody starts into, “Thou art greatest heavenly Father….” and honestly, it’s just weird. If you’re like me, this has probably shaped your view of how to pray. I grew up hearing those prayers, and eventually whenever I was asked to pray out loud I would shy away saying, “I’m not really good at praying.” Do you feel like you’re not good at praying? There’s good news for you. The only way to be “not good” at prayer is to not pray. That’s right. You can’t mess this one up. The secret to being good at prayer is, well, pray; and remember this when you do… Pray like God loves you This one is important. You don’t have to be fake when you pray. So often we try to prove something to God when we talk to him, or impress when praying in front of other people. But we don’t have to prove anything to anybody, especially God. He loves us the way we are. You aren’t going to do anything to make him love you any more or any less. That’s just the way it is. So keep it 100 when you pray and don’t be fake. Pray like God hears you The Bible says that when you pray God can see you and when we call, God answers us. This should give us confidence when we speak to God. He’s not waiting for a prayer that is good enough, he listens for even the faintest prayer for “help.” Listen This is where I was lost for so long. I spent a lot of time talking at God. But when you’re having a conversation with someone, it involves both people talking. I realized I wasn’t even giving time to listen to what God was trying to tell me. When is the last time you asked God something and then paused before moving on down the list? Think about this: the creator of everything wants to listen to you. That’s a big deal. But this is an even bigger deal: the creator of everything wants to speak to you. Be real and be confident. Take time to listen to what God has to say, and just pray. God will talk to you about anything and everything.
