The Shepherd and the Snake Grandmother Nasra had a story to illustrate every situation. One cold winter night we children gathered around the fire and this is the story as my brother, Yusef remembered it. Once upon a time there was a shepherd. He went everyday To tend the sheep. He sat on a rock in front of a cave and p Played the flute and every day when he started to play a snake emerged from the mouthe of the cave and threw him a piece of gold. He took the gold home. One day he was ill and he sent his son to watch the sheep. He told him: Son, take this flute and go tend the sheep.” He told him the story of the snake. And that he was to take the piece of gold and coe back home.. The boy sat on the rock, played the flute and the snake came and threw him a piece of gold. The boy began to think about the gold. He decidedx to enter the cave and take all the gold. He did enter the cave, He and the snake fought and he tried to kill it, but only succeeded in cutting off it’s tail. But the snake coiled around the boys neck so that the boy died. That evening, the sheep came home alone. The father waited anxiously for his son. But he did not come home. He went to the cave and found his son, dead. A week later he returned to the cave as he had always done before. He tied to play the flute but the snake did not come. On the third day, the snake came. He told the man, music can’t help you now. You cannot forget your son and I cannot forget my tail. In this way she taught us how precious trust is, and that once it’s gone. We may not get it back. Also, being greedy can cause us to lose everything. itaf awad
