The Shocking Truth about Howard Webb Even neutrals questioned Webbs odd handling of Raheem Sterling I write a headline like this and I think Im working for a British tabloid. Ive heard the bad talk about some referees in particular and there are always examples of poor calls. But I also believe that these things even themselves out - until yesterday. I decided to do a little digging. Im a stat guy so Ill try to dumb it down for everybody to see the picture without too many numbers and formulas. Webb handled 19 Liverpool games in the last 5 years. Each year we finished between 2nd & 8th but in games Webb handled we only accumulated 17 points. Had we played a full 38 games under Webb we would be relegated with 34 points. Of the 30 teams Webb handles since 2009 only 5 teams had worse records under his refereeing. Eight teams that received more favorable results from Webb have since been relegated. The chart below shows the Big 7 teams, their total points in the past 5 seasons, average points per game, average points per game when Webb was in charge, and the % differential. On the differential 100% means that teams got the same results whether or not Webb was refereeing. Over 100 means they did better with Webb (the higher the number the better they did), less than 100 means they did worse (the lower the number the worse they did). Each of these teams was referred by Webb between 15 & 21 times since 2009. TEAM TOTAL PTS PPG PPG with Webb DIFFERENTIAL Man. Utd. 407 2.14 1.85 86% Man. City 391 2.06 2.41 117% Chelsea 378 1.99 1.69 85% Arsenal 365 1.92 2.33 121% Spurs 342 1.80 1.60 89% Liverpool 318 1.67 0.89 53% Everton 306 1.61 1.50 93% As you can see, whereas the other teams points totals change between 21% positive and 15% negative, and you cant expect the same results without a much broader number of matches, Liverpools total points dropped 47% when Webb was in charge. throughthestorm/jennings (edited)
