The Silver Lining Playbook: Public Safety, Part 2 in a series After establishing a new police commission to deal with corruption, the next step is helping the force become a bigger presence by taking cops out of cars and putting feet on the street walking a beat. No, the idea is not new with me. But I am reinforcing the necessity: a drug dealer wont stand on the same street corner with a police officer. A prowler passes by, the criminal element scatters, then promptly returns to their station. However, I will go a little further in bolstering police presence by also encouraging each and every alderman to walk the streets of their district and find out wheres the trouble. I mean, if aldermen walk the same streets looking for votes and contributions, they should regularly return to find out where the problems are and address them. Together the cop on the beat and the alderman should proceed block by block and find out where the problem is, then make their way to that address. Together they should find out if the problem can be helped. If not, Trouble has but two choices: comply with the law or move. Trouble is put on notice that any further trouble will be prosecuted immediately. Aldermen should earn their pay by serving their districts. No more of this sitting around and waiting for the phone to ring or for an emergency to be broadcast on local tv. Pro-active is what aldermen should be, and cops should be on the scene to help them. Your thoughts?
