The Sins Of Buhari 8: Still On Buharis Achievement And Legacy In Igboland When Buhari terminated the Second Republic, he hurled several Igbo politicians and leaders into Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, while most of his fellow Northern Muslim politicians were given only house arrests or let off the hook entirely. The Igbo prominent politicians and leaders jailed include: former Vice President Alex Ekwueme; former governor of Imo State, Dee Sam Mbakwe and his wife, Victoria Mbakwe; fomer governor of Anambra State, Jim Nwobodo; Biafran War hero, Chief Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and several others too numerous to mention. All of them remained in jail throughout the twenty month duration of Buhari’s regime. They were released one after the other (starting from January 1986) after IBB overthrew the Buharis regime in August 1985. Even at that some of them, like Alex Ekwueme, only regained full freedom in late 1989, six years after. Some of the arrested Igbo politicians and leaders were tried by Buharis kangaroo military tribunal but were never found guilty of corruption nor stealing of public fund, yet Buhari refused to release them instead he invoked his atrocious Decree Number 2 of 1984 to jail them indefinitely. Others like Dim Chukwuema Odumegwu Ojukwu was never tried but remained in prison indefinitely. All of them spent the twenty months of Buhari’s regime in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison. Remember, Decree Number 2 of 1984, known as Detention of Persons Decree in the press, promulgated by Buhari, which basically allowed the Head of State or Military Government, to arrest anybody he wanted and detained definitely without trial. Former Vice President Alex Ekwueme was tried by the kangaroo military tribunal set-up by Buhari. The tribunal declared that Ekwueme was even poorer than he was before he came into office and never corruptly enriched himself nor abused power while in office. Yet, Buhari refused to release him and instead invoked Decree Number 2 to jail him indefinitely while he allowed Shehu Shagari, the president with executive powers whom the bucks ended on his table, to relax in his mansion. He gave Dede Sam Mbakwe, former governor of Imo State, 100-year jail term for stealing nothing and also jailed his wife, Victoria Mbakwe because she was an active First Lady. Dim Ojukwu, who just return from exile, was arrested despite not holding any public office. Ojukwu was never tried but was jailed indefinitely by ruthless Buhari. Jim Nwobodo, former governor of Anambra State, was jailed for 300 years for stealing nothing. All Igbo politicians and leaders tried by Buharis kangaroo military tribunal were sentenced to between 100 to 300 years in prison despite that they were found innocent - jailed for not being corrupt and for stealing nothing, just because they were not Hausa/Fulani Muslims. Considering their ages at the time of sentencing, their jail terms were worse than life sentence with hard labour or death sentence! Now, compare and contrast the treatment of the aforementioned Igbo politicians and leaders with the treatment his fellow Hausa/Fulani Muslim politicians got away with. First, Buhari jailed Vice President Alex Ekwueme indefinitely despite that he was declared innocent, discharged and acquitted of all corruption charges by his kangaroo military tribunal, while he kept President Shehu Shagari, who should take responsibility for his government, under house arrest in a tastefully furnished guest house in a serene environment in Ikoyi, Lagos. Secondly, Buhari left his personal friend - Awwal Ibrahim - the then highly corrupt governor of Niger State who was arrested at Heathrow Airport in London with £14 million and several millions of naira and dollars. Awwal was never jailed. He was placed under house arrest in his mansion like Shagari for just two weeks and indeed released. And thirdly, Buhari also allowed Shehu Kangiwa, Sokoto State governor, who conducted and supervised the famous Bakolori Massacre of poor peasant farmers whose land were appropriated without compesation, to remain under house arrest. Buhari, by his utterances, actions, deeds and policies while in and out of power and public offices, has shown disdain for the Igbo race and his anti Igbo feelings isnt in doubt. To be continued! Vote wisely, vote against General Muhammadu Buhari, vote for President Goodluck Jonathan on Valentines Day, on FailBuhari day!
